Figure and Ground

The figure and ground project was a design challenge playing with the balance of black and white while displaying hierarchy and relationship between figure and ground. For this project we explored how figure and ground could be used in the sense of typography, a number 1-10 was used as either the figure of the ground as well as letters spelling “typography”. Through this, process sketches were produced to explore different focuses and values. Ideas such as shape, rhythmic pattern, flow, and value transition. it was a challenge to exceed the forms that the letters and numbers make and to instead look at them as more illustrations. Flow was a goal in this project as I believe the audience will look at this physical representation from top to bottom. The final product transitions from heavier values of dark to heavier values of white explored the figure and ground of numbers and letters.

Updated

Process sketches allowed for different types of consistency to be explored. The original did not seem to follow a pattern throughout the whole product, the top was not flowing into the bottom half of the vertical transformation. Attempting to fix this, I tried to make the top section have a higher level of black that would transition into less and less black. I believe the value transition is more prominent in the updated product, however, more exploration of the forms could strengthen it more.
